Qualities of a Wonderful Board Member
A colleague recently lamented a “terrible” board appointment she’d simply attended, and wondered whether it was likely to recruit better members. I posed problem to a number of individuals, and the answers were all very similar: superb board affiliates are passionate about your trigger, dependable, readily available and interested in attending group meetings and events, willing to take part in fundraising, and forward-thinking.
While this is certainly authentic, I as well believe that the qualities which make a great plank member go beyond background, experience and organizational acumen. While it is easy to give attention to these features, there are many more, and the key to finding them is often in a plank member’s attitude.
Passionate about the cause – It goes without saying that the passionate table member will be considerably more invested in the success of your organization. They may have a private connection to the mission or just have a solid desire to fulfill your vision. In any event, they will be dedicated to your cause of the long haul and will also be excited to support the board’s initiatives and strategies.
Recognizes around edges – A very good board affiliate understands that the role from the board can be not to manage the company, but instead to support it in its expansion and accomplishment. They can begin to see the trends and likely stumbling blocks that will influence the business in three to five years, and will inspire the executive group to think larger.
Actively adds great board member to committee discussions – A highly regarded board member is always searching for ways to include value towards the board. They will aren’t afraid to share their particular opinions and can even offer creative solutions which can help the aboard advance its agenda.
